Learn the key phrases. You can earn the favor of the locals simply by babbling a few standard phrases in their language. After those magic words, even if they're spoken clumsily, you're free to switch to universal English.

Improvise. If you come with a tour group, don't be attached to them like a faithful puppy. Break away from the standard tour, plot your own route through those thematic places that interest you specifically. Grab your backpack and give yourself over to the terrain (if it is non-threatening).
